14.1. Roman coins

The manufacture and use of coins in Rome starts in the 4th century B.C, during the Republic. The temple of Juno Moneta in Rome was the place where coins were manufactured. Then, Roman mints spread in all the provinces.

During the empire, coins showed the portrait of emperors in their obverse. In the revers, it was very usually the representation of divinities or all kind of objects symbolizing concepts or representing Rome's history, such as peace, power, prosperity, victory, Rome's origins...
