13.5. Urbanism in ancient Rome.

Many centuries after its foundation, Rome became a large city with almost one million inhabitants. Rome was the center of a large empire and its rulers wanted it to be the most beautiful city in the world.

Emperors ordered the construction of many buildings for different purposes: temples, theaters, amphitheaters, baths, circus, triumphal arches, aqueducts...

The most beautiful area was the city centre, the Forum, where people met to trade, participate in political events, walk and visit temples to honour their gods.
