What do we know about ancient Greek culture? Let's find out!
Alphabetic writing: About 750 BC, because of their trade relations through the sea, Greeks adopted the alphabetic Phoenician writing and adapted it to their language. The Greeks used some of the Phoenician letters and devised new ones, resulting in the world's first phonemic alphabet represented by consonant and vowel sounds. Very soon, this alphabet was used to write great literary works such as The Iliad and The Odyssey.
The Greeks had many gods and goddesses. They were polytheistic and also believe in the extraordinary virtues of demigods or heroes.
Architecture: The Greeks were good builders and built impressive temples for their gods and other functional buildings for their political institutions. In the cities, Greek people spent much time on the streets. Most of them lived in modest houses but rich people had big houses with several rooms.
Sculpture: The Greeks decorated their temples and streets with many great statues developing a particular style by which they represented the idealist versions of their gods.
The Greeks loved going to festivals. They loved sports meetings, theatre festivals, religious festivals, dance and music shows.
Trades: The peasants in the countryside cultivated wheat, grapes, olives and raised sheep, goats and pigs. In the cities lived merchants and artisans (carpenters, potters, tanners, painters, weavers, builders, blacksmiths...)
Education: The education system was different in each city, depending on the role of the citizens in the society.
